The world’s leading eye specialists came together in Istanbul for Retina and OCT Symposium and shared latest methods.
Everything about retina, that is considered to be the center of eye, was discussed by the eye specialists in the 1st Retina and OCT Symposium with international participation which was held by the hosting of Dunyagoz. 1st Retina and OCT Symposium with international participation was held in Istanbul on March 23rd, 2014 at Swissôtel The Bosphorus hosted by Dunyagoz Hospitals Group with the cooperation of Wills Eye Hospital and University of Rome. The latest innovations about retinal diseases and treatment methods and the experiences in America, Italy and Turkey were shared with eye specialists at the symposium.
The latest innovations in eye care field were discussed.
Medical director of Dunyagoz Hospital Group Prof. Dr. Kazım Devranoğlu stated, “We are very happy and honored to organize 1st Retina and OCT Symposium with international participation. Dunyagoz is the first hospital group in Turkey and in Europe, which feature the maximum number of eye specialists. Therefore, by setting an international symposium, we wanted to share the latest innovations in eye care with our colleagues. In the near future, we will keep on organizing new symposiums about different eye care specialties.”
Early detection methods of Parkinson and Alzheimer were revealed.
Prof. Dr. Cengiz Aras from Dunyagoz Etiler, signified that if the retinal diseases didn’t be treated in time, it might cause permanent blindness. Prof. Dr. Aras added that early detection is very important to prevent permanent blindness due to retinal diseases. “We discussed the importance of early detection methods of neurodegenerative diseases especially Parkinson and Alzheimer in the 1st Retina and OCT Symposium with international participation.” he said.
Medicine Usage to dismiss the surgery in retinal diseases
In his presentation, Robert C. Sergott from Wills Eye Hospital known for his works in Neuroophthalmology all over the world, stated that with the usage of ocriplasmin active ingredient medicine for retinal diseases, which is practiced in USA and many countries in Europe, there is no need for surgery. Dr. Sergott added, “We reach 40-50 percent success in retinal diseases by using this medicine. Even though it is not licensed in Turkey yet, I believe that when it is allowed, it will be used extensively. This medicine is useful the combination of vitreous shrink and detachment of retina from its current location. Moreover, it also helps macular holes to be closed.” Prof. Dr. Sergott also talked about Multicolor OCT method, which is used for diagnosing retinal diseases. “This device will help doctors to diagnose brain diseases at the early stages. Multicolor OCT method is widely used in Europe to detect Parkinson and other neurodegenerative diseases.” he said.
10 layers’ map of the retina can be displayed now
Dr. Marco Rispoli from Rome Ospedale Nuovo Regina Margherita Hospital, specializing in the areas of the retina and ocular imaging system, stated that in the last 5 years, OCT method became very important to diagnose the retinal diseases. Dr. Rispoli, who stated that they use OCT efficiently for both diagnosis and follow-ups currently, also defined that advanced technologies allow to scan and map the 10 layers of retina in a detailed way. He added “With the new technologies, there is also no need to inject a radioopaque contrast agent into the blood vessel for angiography. The blood flow can be shown by displaying methods.”
